Dead Writers Society: The Classics Book Club

Dead Writers Society is a space for exploring classic literature, free from the constraints of conventional praise or criticism. We approach the classics with an open mind and a spirit of curiosity. While we acknowledge the historical significance of these works, we believe that their true value lies in the personal experience they offer to each reader.

We Take Our Time
Life’s busy, so we keep our reading load light—50 to 100 pages per meeting. Longer works will unfold over several meetings. In a world that often feels rushed, we embrace a slower pace allowing for attentive reading and thoughtful discussion.

We Gather at Twilight
During the meeting we will talk about reading habits and relationship with the classics as well as our response to Edgar Allan Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher and The Purloined Letter.

Please, read both short stories before the meeting
You can find them for free on Project Gutenberg.

We Welcome All
The club is for those seeking meaningful conversations, critical thinking opportunities, and a community of like-minded individuals who share a love for reading.
We welcome participants from diverse backgrounds, as a variety of perspectives enriches our discussions. Whether you are a seasoned reader of the classics, someone who has always wanted to delve into these monumental texts but never had the chance, or a skeptic of their value, this book club offers a safe place to share your experience.

We Just Want to Have Fun
The main goal of the Dead Writers’ Society is to share the joy of reading, interpretation, and conversation.
While we can’t guarantee that every classic will be a purely agreeable experience, the journey through these challenging, confusing, and occasionally boring texts is part of the fun.
We intend to host thought-provoking conversations that go beyond the plot and uncover the underlying themes reflected in our personal reactions to the text.
We hope to equip our members with the tools to critically assess other literary works, promoting a deeper understanding of literature and language as a whole.
